The Gordon Community Centre is ramping up for its next Gordon Community Day event planned for the 25th of March 2023 from 10am -1pm.
Supported by Anglicare and the Lanyon Valley Anglican Church, the Gordon Community Centre provides a range of services and programs in Canberra’s south. Their community day events bring together staff, volunteers, church and community members to highlight the centre’s offerings and bring in much-needed donations of materials and funds.
All community members are invited to attend and enjoy the day’s activities. Partner café Little Luxton will be open, offering artesian coffee. There will be a bake stall and a sausage sizzle, plus a pop-up op shop, book stall and kids activities.
Staff, volunteers, and church members will be available on the day to talk about the services the centre runs and to explain about volunteering opportunities and ways to donate.
With the current cost of living crisis, Gordon Community Centre’s coordinator, Rose Flintoff is hoping to highlight this as an opportunity to donate non-perishable food items—which will help stock the centre’s food pantry. “We want to let people know in advance that they can bring donations of groceries on the day” she said. “We will have bins set up to collect offerings which will then be passed on to those in need in the community.”
During the most recent community day event in November, the centre raised $1076 through their stalls plus additional cash donations from generous community members. On average, more than 250 individuals and families receive emergency food relief from Gordon Community Centre each month (according to data collected May-October 2022).
