Anglicare and St John’s Care emergency relief services are calling for donations of non-perishable food and toiletries in preparation for an expected increase in need as COVID-19 restrictions ease in the ACT. Anglicare’s Gordon Community Centre in south Canberra, and St John’s Care in Reid have been open throughout the lockdown period, with welfare calls and some home deliveries conducted by the staff to ensure regular clients can still access support.
Jason Haines, Acting Executive Director at St John’s Care, is concerned that the number of people accessing the service is below pre-lockdown levels. “We know that many people who need food assistance are not reaching out for help at this time,” says Mr Haines. “Some are too stressed to leave their homes, or are struggling with a disability and finding transport challenging. Others have lost work and are waiting on Jobkeeper payments to try and stay afloat financially.”
Lockdowns have meant that food donations, which these emergency relief services rely on, are not being received. Individuals and organisations are encouraged to call the St John’s Care team in Reid on 6248 7771 to arrange for COVID-safe food donation drop-offs.
Since the end of the COVID supplement and the easing of moratoriums to assist renters, many disadvantaged families are further struggling to make ends meet.
Donations can be dropped off at St John’s Care, 42 Constitution Ave, Reid and will also be distributed to families through Gordon Community Centre.
