Anglicare marks International Day of People with Disabilities with participants from disability services
The team from Anglicare’s disability services are recognising International Day of People with Disabilities on 5 December with a BBQ luncheon celebration at the Red Door Cafe at the Parish Hall, 15B Page Street, Moruya from midday to 2pm.
The event celebrates the achievements and contribution of disability services participants who have often overcome huge physical and emotional obstacles to engage with the local community.
South Coast local, Margaret Graeber has been involved with Anglicare’s disability services in Moruya for over a year. “I have Multiple Sclerosis and it can be a bit lonely being unable to leave home most of the time,” says Margaret. “But since contacting Anglicare it’s been wonderful! The team are so friendly and help take me shopping and to appointments. I never had that support or interaction before. My life is so much happier now.”
Coordinator of Anglicare’s Disability Services in Moruya, Sam Fearnley says the BBQ event is also a wonderful opportunity for people in the Moruya community to meet with participants and enjoy food and conversation.
“We want to make sure that people in our disability services can be part of a variety of community events,” says Ms Fearnley. “While there is certainly a government spotlight on disability services with the roll out of the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme), at Anglicare we understand the importance of involving local communities with the work that we do and the participants we support.”
Community members are encouraged to come along to meet the team and participants and to find out firsthand how inclusion can help to make communities stronger.
