This is Marge’s story of what makes volunteering worthwhile and what keeps her coming back, eight years on.
“At first, I couldn’t think of anything startling or ‘newsworthy’ to tell about my many years of volunteering at Anglicare. There were no amazing incidents that came to mind. But then a friend of mine reminded me that sometimes the small, simple stories are worth telling. And I’d say that’s true. For me, it has been the simple, individual dealings with people that have made volunteering an adventure, and so worthwhile. And those little things happen nearly every day!
Just last week, a woman came into the shop. She is a frequent visitor who I believe works in the clothing industry. She knows a good buy when she sees one! I passed her while she was in the dress aisle and noticed her holding up a very, very lovely dress, one I would love to wear any time. I couldn’t help but comment on the beautiful greens and apricot colours of the fabric.
Later, when she came to the counter, she was just so excited. “Even if I have to make an adjustment to the fit, I just love it”, she said. “And, it still has the tag on it. It’s brand new!”
This is the joy I get from volunteering. We recycle goods that bring joy to buyers. Circumstances vary; it could be just a good find, something that sparks creativity, a mother or grandparent buying clothes for their family at a reasonable price, or someone who comes in just to say hello and see friendly, familiar faces.
These simple things bring joy to so many. I love volunteering for these reasons, and I enjoy being part of a great team. We have morning teas, we chat about the shop—and also about what’s going on our lives. And I think that’s what we really get out of it.
Even after all these years, I never tire of entering our lovely shop. I’m like a child in a toy shop looking at what’s new for the day and spotting the unusual. I especially love to decorate the tables. I come in and find a centrepiece and build on that, thinking about how I can improve on displays and make someone’s day…and doing that makes my day!”
