Hundreds of local families are expected to benefit from Anglicare and St Saviours Cathedral annual Christmas Giving Tree appeal which launched earlier this month. This marks the eleventh year of the appeal, and St Saviour’s sub-dean, Canon Anne Wentzel says that she is already overwhelmed by the response from the community.
“We’ve already received around a high number of presents; and after such a difficult couple of years, and with rising costs of living, to see people being so generous is incredibly encouraging. These gifts will make a huge difference for increasing numbers of local families finding themselves in financial difficulties at this time of year. Thank you Goulburn!,” said Canon Wentzel.
The presents will be distributed by Anglicare staff and volunteers to families in the Goulburn area over the next week.
Anglicare’s manager of housing and social services Toni Reay said over 600 local people have been assisted by the organisation over the past 12 months, and many of these families will benefit from the St Saviour’s Giving Christmas Tree gifts.
“Australia is experiencing a national housing and cost of living crisis, and communities like Goulburn are affected by this. More and more individuals and families are visiting our emergency relief and housing support services in the lead up to Christmas,” said Ms Reay. “Christmas puts financial strain on many families, but for people who are already vulnerable, it can mean choosing between paying rent or buying food and gifts for Christmas. These gifts will take that burden off many families, and remind them that their community cares for them. ”
Residents are encouraged to donate unwrapped presents at St Saviours Cathedral located at 170 Bourke St, Goulburn, on or prior to 23 December or call 4823 4000.
Anglicare would also like to thank the community for the support during 2022 and we wish you all a happy Christmas and a healthy and safe 2023.
