In preparation for Australia Day, the children at the Anglicare at Franklin School Early Learning Centre were blessed to receive some very special visitors.
Hon Dr Andrew Leigh MP and two members of the local police stopped by to hear some lively singing, watch a child-led, duel, flag raising ceremony, and to help celebrate the unique diversity of Australia.
When speaking with the children, Dr Leigh praised the Franklin centre for championing multiculturalism, saying: “I love the way your centre celebrates those differences and those strengths that make up modern Australia”.
Centre Director, Caroline Suisuiki said that the focus on multiculturalism at the centre is intentional, as there is a high level of diversity among both staff and participants. “It is a great opportunity to celebrate all the beautiful countries and cultures that make up Australia”, she said.
Dr Leigh agreed that this is, indeed, worth celebrating. “I want to offer a simple message on Australia Day”, he said “which is that difference is good. Difference is part of what makes up Australia.”
Before they left, the children presented Mr Leigh with some stunning and creative artwork and the local police with a certificate of appreciation. For many of the children, however, it was the police departure that was the main highlight. As the cruiser drove away from the centre, the children cheered to see a full light show, complete with blaring sirens.
We want to thank Dr Leigh, the local police and the many families that joined us for this special event. Click here to learn more about our early learning centres.
