Goulburn-Mulwaree and Lachlan Shire residents can look forward to extra support as they navigate the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) with the official opening of Anglicare’s Disability Day Centre in Goulburn on Tuesday 1 August. The newly refurbished facility which includes wheelchair access, communal spaces, kitchen facilities, and accessible outdoor environments, has been designed to respond to the specific needs of people living with a disability. The facility also includes an office for support staff and an Anglicare NDIS business manager to assist and support participants and carers through the individualised NDIS planning process.
“This centre provides space for person-centred activities to enhance people’s life outcomes and allow them to engage with the community. It’s also a place where people can seek information about their NDIS plan, which we hope will reduce anxiety for participants,” says Simon Bennett, Anglicare’s Executive for Disability Services. “The comprehensive services and supports offered at the centre are what we know people in our community want and need.”
The facility, which began operation earlier in July, was refurbished in collaboration with community stakeholders and is a hub for many participants where they can gather to socialise as well as engage in personalised activities like art or cooking. It also serves as a base for participants who may travel to other activities during the day, like the gym.
“Having disability services staff on location every week day gives real support and stability for both participants and carers. The design of the space also means it can function as a multi-purpose facility where other groups, like our school holidays children’s group, can also run,” says Sallyann Allport, Manager of Anglicare’s Disability Services. “The feedback we are already receiving from people about the facilities and the service has been extremely positive.”
Anglicare’s Disability Day Centre operates Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm (as well as some evening and weekends) and is located at 132 Cowper St, Goulburn.
